From what I've heard, there's plenty of oil in the Aleutians. I think the reason we don't use it is politics. It would mess up the whole infrastructure of international relations.
As for natural gas, and other resources, I think that has to do with politics, also. Oil companies don't want to give up the money to make such a change and the federal government isn't prepared to force them to because they are a huge sum of wealth for the nation. Here is an interesting question: What is the most dominant force in America today, government or business?
