Enneagram Type 5 Board Archive Re: what type could i be?Posted by isaacthe54 on November 18, 2000 at 13:22:59: In Reply to: what type could i be? posted by schrips on November 17, 2000 at 04:46:06: schrips, you are either a 4/5 or a 5/4. you are not both. being a 4/5 is not being "half four and half 5", either. there are two types of 4, a 4/5 and a 4/3. both are, at their very core, 100% 4, and manifest that 4ness in slightly different ways. same goes for a 5/4 and a 5/6, or any other set of suptypes. it's like this: you ACTUALLY ARE your base type. that type truly describes the way that your personality operates, at very deep levels. the wing, more often than not, is a set of personality traits that you would like to think you posess. (often this includes the faults that you would like to beleive you have.) your wing is what you would like to believe you are like, so you can deny a lot of your faults and delude yourself into not having to change. for this reason, people tend to act more like their wing when they are unhealthy; they are getting deeper into self-delusion of some sort or another so that they can avoid realizing that they need to change things about themselves to be healthy and happy. it's very easy to take an enneagram test and show up as your wing. why? well, you're answering questions about yourself, and you'd like to think you're like your wing. so, of course, i'd answer a bunch of questions like a 4, just cause i'd like to think i'm a 4. of course, everyone who knows me, and probably a bunch of peopel on this board, know i'm a 5/4. 5/4s like to think they're really loners, adventurous and passionate, the one in a million. we'd like to think we're 4s, some have even been caught claiming to "feel deeply". but we're not 4s. 54s are quite often painfully apathetic. and 5s are much more focused on their mental abilities than 45s. that is, they play games apon games all day long just to use their minds in new ways. 54s often pick up things like programming, chess, math, physics, and so on with remarkable ease. the evil genius archetypical villian is almost always a 5 who, tho evil, is so unhealthy that he is a crazy man, but who is still very intelligent. 54s may "feel deeply" but they'd never know. now, i've met a few 45s who would really like to think that they are cold dispassionate observers, using their rational capabilities to the utmost in objective analysis of every situation. bullshit. 45s think with their hearts. they may be observant and interested, but they're primarily motivated by their passionate intuitions. look at lisa simpson. she's a genius, (so smart was let into gatica in a halloween episode) but she really does things because she feels strongly about it. she sings the blues. and, sure, she may talk a good game about science and whatnot, but she's an artist, in every sense of the word. >>>>>>>> : I just started learning about the enneagram recently you're on the right track, but stay away from enneagram tests. they severely oversimplify the situation. a test can't tell you anything you can't tell yourself. study more, read more different authors, talk to people about it, analyze various fictional characters from tv shows you know, that sorta thing. get a better understanding fo the enneagram. you aren't 2 types. you don't change type. you just pretend to sometimes.
short of SERIOUS brain alteration, this talk of changing your type is just silly. the more you study and understand the enneagram, the more you see that it's just not as easy as that. look at it this way: it would be significantly more strange to wake up one morning a different type than to wake up one morning and be left-handed. seriously, to get another personality type is like saying that the first YOU doesn't exist any more. (after all, what is your identity but your type and your memories, the what and the way of thinking and self consiousness?) are you just gonna forget your childhood? forget decades of a particular way of organizing your thoughts?? these are things that are learned FIRST, before you start to learn things like your name or what your hands are for. sorry to shoot you down, kb. i agree, one of the best parts of this board is that there are so many different opinions. TheGauntOne exactly. so what exactly did i mean by "serious brain alteration"?
of course, not every author describes every type perfectly. isaac the 54
