Quite true. But in order to understand the world, you must also understand your own biases about the world, and therefore self-understanding is necessary to prevent as much skewing of viewpoint as possible. If the self-understanding is merely understanding of a single perspective, then it is not self-understanding. The world also includes much more than people.
