: : : : ryan, you rock. i wish more non-pot smokers felt that way, and told their congresspeople. i dont' think it's the cure to the world's problems, but it certainly fixes what's wrong with me.
: : : Thanks. I'm all for both medical and recreational marijuana use. I've had a few good times with the drug and also a few pretty unspectacular times... enough to keep me from being a regular user. But I've always failed to see the true "harm" of marijuana usage. It's not physically addictive and you don't do stupid, criminal acts while under the influence like one can do while under the influence of alcohol. I have never, ever heard of a "marijuana-influenced crime" while one hears of alcohol- influenced ones on a daily basis.
: : yes, that's it EXACTLY. the myth of marijuana influenced crimes, interestingly enough, was the official reason why it was outlawed in teh us in the first place. (plus the general social trend towards prohibition at the time.) there was a guy who went nuts and killed a few people. it came out that he also was a marijuana user, and some lobbyists for the timber industry floated teh story that the marijuana, a "powerful hallucinogen which impairs proper moral judgement," was what led him to commit the crime. of course, the guy was also drunk at the time, and a paranoid schizophrenic. to make the story even wilder, teh timber industry wanted marijuana illegal not because of any harm it ever did to society, but becasue of the harm it was doing to their wallets. at the time, cannibus was a chief source of paper fiber, and was easier and cheaper to grow and manufacture than trees. so, some big business pigs talked congress into making pot illegal so that they could cut down more trees.
: : numerous reputable tests and mountains of experience have shown that as a general rule, marijuana does not cause aggressive tendencies, but instead significantly REDUCES them. there is simply no reason whatsoever for marijuana to be illegal. none. it's stupid. cops and prisons are wasted catching and punishing peaceful harmless and (otherwise) law-abiding citizens, and the government (at best!) only siezes 10-15% of all drugs in circulation. the war on drugs is just another vietnam.
: : : In fact I question the logic of making any drug illegal as long as it's used in the privacy of one's home and as long as it doesn't cause one to want to commit crimes. Of course some drugs are so addictive that laws exist merely to protect people from becoming addicted to them... but I don't think the goverment should restrict people's freedom of choice like this. If people want to become crackheads, let them... don't put them in jail because of their choice, get them treatment instead. There are a lot of stupid people out there...
: : well, i don't think we (teh govt that is) should provide treatment for doing something that's legal. if that's the case, if people NEED treatment if they do this, it should just be illegal to save the taxpayers' money. but what we SHOULD do, i think, is say, hey, you can do whatever drugs you want. if you break any other laws, you're going to jail. let the crackheads kill themselves or get themselves thrown in prison if they can't handle it. it's their life they're screwing over, let em.
: : our culture is afflicted by a curse, and it's masquerading as wisdom. at the end of every episode of jerry springer, the litmus paper that sits at the bottom of the cultural pool, the jerry says, "take care of yourselves... and eachother." it's the curse of the Fellow Man. the idea that it is my responsibility to make sure that strangers are happy and healthy. it's not my responsibility to take care of anything except myself. all that i do feeds that responsibility. perfect and celebrate your self. be the best you you can be. relish in autonomy. if you want something from someone, offer a trade. i mean, i'm not discounting love here, and i DO protect and care for hte ones i love. but love is not something i give to strangers or for free. i'm no slut. i will protect and respect the RIGHT of strangers to make sure they are healthy and happy, so long as it does not impinge on my right to do the same. why should the other umteen billions of people in this country CARE if i do a drug, even if it will kill me? or if i cut my arm open with a knife? personally, i think the right to harm oneself should be protected by law, providing that the person is an adult.
: : ok, enough political ranting for one night.

: New to the boards...however I agree about the Timber Lobby. I recall reading that it was William Randolph Hearst that owned a fair amount of timber land and paper mills in addition to his newspapers. Nifty racket to have such a monopoly on both the supply and main use of paper at the time. Anyway, he would be on of the, if not the largest, big business pig talking to Congress. He also used his newspaper empire to spread public fear of marijuana.
