Personally, I like to think of it as a color spectrum... it's very hard to tell THE point where blue becomes green.

health is like this. type is not.

you are exactly one of two subtypes of exactly one of 9 types. even if you are totally christlike and integrated and all that, you never change type. a 5 is not an 8, even if he integrates. everything you do is for 5 reasons, even if you totally act like a healthy 8 all the time. when you disintegrate, you never change type. a totally unhealthy 5 delving into the deepest sickest self-destructive 7ness is not a 7. he is a 5. always and forever, you are your type.

from moment to moment, however, you are more or less healthy. the reason that there are no names for the types is that one word cannot possibly sum up the type in all its fullness. a 5 has emotions, and even if those emotions are strong, they don't make you a 4 for the moment. 4s can be rational, and even when they are rational, they are not 5s. no. never.

the difference is in the very deepest part of your psyche. you dont' change that, ever.

5s: afraid of the world, struggles to understand it, overdeveloped intellect, represses emotions out of habit. obsessed with their mental performance, being the "best" at thinking.
4s: desires to see themselves as an "artist", passionate, richly developed fantasy world, thinks with their heart out of habit. obsessed with honesty, being true to their inner nature.

you can't be half one type and half another.
you can't change type.

you are one type
with one wing
you were that type when you were little
you'll be that type when you die

that type is you healthy, and that type is you unhealthy
that type describes how you do everything you do.

they enneagram is not a system of blurry lines, but it is very expressive and dynamic
that's what makes it so great.
