: Fixed type is too rigid to represent human nature in 4 dimensions.
no, it really isn't. each type is 4 dimensional, as deep and wonderful as the personality it represents. there is no need to change type becuase you can change so dramatically within your type.

it is not putting extra limitations on oneself to admit what limitations there are. if anything, it is removing the limitation of ignorance.

: The enneagram is not pure science and therefore is not LAW. It is simply an elegant model for representing a concept.
pure science is not law.
and an elegant model, it is. in fact, it works perfectly, tho we do not always use it perfectly. be critical of your enneagram authors: they're human. don't blame the system for a faulty description of it.

: Consider the formation of personality. Do you believe that who you are is determined 100% by genetics and set at birth? No, a predisposition is in place but the events of your early childhood do a lot to form who you become. Hudson and Riso provide for this... a 5 is ambivalent to both parents, a 4 is disconnected from both parents... environmental factors impact the early development of personality at least. At what point does that influence end... if ever?

the riso personality developement chart is nice and symmetric, but i personally think it's bs, somewhat. i don't know what causes personality, or when it happens. but, it's early in life, if not before birth. it is certainly before any real sort of self-consiousness (as self-consiousness is commonly understood.)

: At what point does that environmental influence end and personality become fixed... if ever?

just because you are exactly one type, your personality is not necessarily fixed. one type is remarkably dynamic, allowing for all sorts of different people and healths and dispositions and worldviews, etc, etc, etc. two sevens are TWO PEOPLE; they are not the same. i am still influenced by my environment, greatly in fact, but my environment will not make me stop being a 5. (unless, fo course, my environment drops a piano on my head and i stop being.)

: To illustrate: someone who was a 5.9995 could change enough to become a 6.0003?

the enneagram is not the real number system.
there are no fractions or decimals in it.
it's not "math" really. it's just a system. we could just as easily labelled the types with letters. the numbers are arbitrary symbols representing a personality, not an "amount" of some sort of "stuff".

a 56 couldn't change into a 65. a 56 is not a five who's on the side of 6. a 56 is one of 2 possible types of 5. a 65 is one of 2 different types of 6. a 56 is as different from a 65 in many ways as he is from, say, a 91. in fact, as a 54, i find i have more in common with 7s and 89s than with 45s. (pragmatic approach to the world, respect for intellect over woowoo crap, etc.)

likewise, a persno does not have a "strong" or a "weak" wing. it's just that, sometimes, we lean on our wing more than at other times, making it SEEM that we have a stronger or weaker wing. but, that same person may wake up and realize that he's not who he had been pretending to be, and stop leaning on his wing so much once his is more comfortable with himself.

for this reason, also, you can **TEST** as a type that you are not.
once again, i must point out that
!!ENNEAGRAM!!
!!TESTS!!
!!!!SUCK!!!!
and often mistype a person. (especially 6s, i've noticed.)

prove me wrong.
find a person who (short of serious neurological change) "changed type".
(note: must be a genuine flip. not just someone who tested wrong or misunderstood the type they thought they were.)
