Cecil, I think you should realise that in England we have a different attitude towards people that don't have jobs than the condemnatory one that appears to exist in America. Here there are not enough jobs to go round so nobody is too bothered if those who are not the best people for them or not up to it, whether physically or mentally don't want them.

I myself am living on state benefits because it is the only way I can do a teacher training course - also i could not cope with a lot of jobs. I would also be perfectly entitled under our system to go on sick pay for reasons connected to a diagnosed hormone imbalance and also for psychological reasons.

It is very difficult for people who have been unemployed a long time, or housewives for a long time to get back into work. Also the wages are often not sufficient to cover the costs of childcare for single/separated mothers. A lot of older people who have been made redundant, and I mean people in their forties, find it very difficult to get work due to a bias towards employing younger people and the loss of an industry that they may have been involved in all their lives and which has little in the way of transferable skills eg. the now closed down coal mines.

Many of the people on social security benefits suffer from forms of mental illness, often undiagnosed or unnacepted by the person themselves. Some unemployed people are those with disabilities. Others are those doing voluntary work part or full time.
