President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the 4th Thursday of November as
the national observance of the Pilgrims' thanksgiving for having survived the
first year in the new world. It is a tribute to the human spirit and (IMO)
a recognition that there is more to life than self.
I am getting together with my older son, my fiancee' and her sons. I am cooking
a 13 lb turkey with stuffing, candied yams, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans (haricots)
cranberry sauce, pumpkin mousse. The wine selection is Australian Shiraz and
a Califoria Triad (Semillon, chardonay, suavignon blanc.) Dessert is pumpkin pie
with whipped cream (Chantilly,) Apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Coffee.
Afterwards we will probably go to the new James Bond movie. Then next day in the
great American tradition, the first and biggest day of Christmas shopping.
I don't make the conventions,; I just follow them. Enjoy yourself whereever you are.
