Here's a 'spec-only-based' theory:
Sub-types integrate and disintegrate according to our current levels of psychological health as well as our 'type'.
The objective is to maintain 'equilibrium' between our three sub-types. When we do this well, and keep them in 'balance', we integrate the three pyschological sub-parts of our personality together, we reach the highest levels of health.
When one or two of our sub-types gets out of 'balance' with the others, then we disintegrate to poorer levels of psychological health.

For example, when a young woman confuses her need for self-preservation for intimacy, she ends up getting married too young because she thinks this will help her survive. While acting in the interests of self-preservation, she is actually confusing it as intimacy. Or, if a man marries a woman because he wants to 'look good' in fron tof society; seyes, he is actually trying meet his social needs by calling it intimacy.
These people are getting all of their needs mixed up and then calling it the wrong thing.

That's why to maintain the best, highest levels of health, we must push ourselves to keep these sub-type needs separate and apart and not confuse them with another.
There's too many people running around acting like children, somebody must remind them to control themselves.

I think everyone here should start getting a grip on things and control yourself.
It starts with focusing on integration of apparently disparate sub-type parts of self.
