Check out Palmer's "The Enneagram." Possibly Riso. Anyway, the motivation is to give to others in exchange for love and affection. 3s are very dependent on others to approve and accept their image for love. My parents have been saying I depend on the approval of others for years, they just didn't know it had a psychological term.
I kinda sorta wanted to help you figure out your type in exchange for gratefulness and praise.

Even if the guy is horribly wrong (I doubt it), he's a very intelligent person and I enjoy listening to his insights about me and the people in my "real life". At my college, it's free. I'd give it a try. It would hurt anything.
