: Hey Geenius & Andy, : As a web neophyte, could you please explain to me what the issues are that both of you are upset about as mentioned above. I know alot of people on geocities's links. : Thanks, : Dave There is a fucked up thing called cookies. It can hold your name email-adress, information about places you have been and so on...This makes it easy to get an overview over your internet habit's (that's easy anyway, but even easier with cookies). I think there is a site where you actually can see your cookie file (can't remeber the name).
One result can be spam - This junk mailes you get. The intension is that cookies should be used for web-shop's to build a profile over the user's (so that next time you return to the webshop you get's directly where you was the last time), however as many other thing's it is mostly abused. Geocities probably sell's imformation about the visitors giving you junk. So bacically they makes money on having a server where people can get free web pages. There are a lot of server's using this consept. What might seem like charety is nothing but money making. You are also forced to have advertising for geocities plus a stupid pop up thing. One good reason for geocities is that it's free, and you are relatively anonymous (like Lady Strange) if you choose to. But geocities can really irritate (ones ?) with cookies and advertising. After all I can't see that there is any reason why you shouldn't visit geosities. Why not do something stupied once in a while Genius ?
