This sounds like you're trying to make reality conform to theory.

I would say if we find that people seem to change ennea-types, and theory says they shouldn't, then we ought to change our ideas about the enneagram, not our perceptions of personality.

I am not convinced either way as to whether people do change ennea-types. But I do believe that strong life experiences can drastically alter our orientations towards people and new experiences and possibly our defense mechanisms.
