Paul refers to seeing in a mirror dimly. My own exegesis interpreted
that as my mind mirroring it's own reality. When I was a child, I thought
as a child.... When the perfect comes, the partial will be dealt away.
I do not mean to start a religious discussion, except to comment that
consciousness has human limitations, including the ability to be conscious
of one's own consciousness. Contemplative life is not bad but can
be a cul de sac. Awareness comes through living life. Naturally,
I rationalize balance (9 stuff) but I am encouraged by Paul's exhortation.
Abide these, Faith, Hope, Charity (love.)
A more sectarian approach might be the Heisenberg uncertainty principle:
observation creates it's own effect, i.e., nothing can be perfectly detected,
only approximated.
Emerson said that an unexamined life was a life unlived. I suspect he was not
encouraging a life exclusively focused on examination, but rather reflective
engagement with life (Head, Heart, Gut.)
