I am not real sure either, but one form is accepting parental observations as givens: You are so clumsy; She's the pretty one; dreamer; Oh, we all feel that way. The messages are accepted and internalized as true. Later as adults the tapes play back and we cannot tell they are tapes of other people's projections, rationalizations, etc. Our self image or reference point consists of internalized "truths." I have read that many 4s report critical 1s in their childhood. Maybe those 4s are aware of the critical "Super-ego" and one of its source. (Boundaries) Substitute care-givers/important others for parents. I am not sure if internalized impessions are the same as internalized judgements, but I doubt it. I believe that the "voice" originates from without. New experiences can undo the voice. Cognitive theory is one approach. Whoops, commercial is over. Back to the Discovery Channel. (I had the tellie on mute.)
