In Reply to: So is there no difference between introjecting and internalising? nt posted by Tiggy on July 02, 2000 at 14:16:16:
Maybe, we internalize after sufficient separation and individuation have occurred. Introjection implies (IMO) an unconscious, intra-pyschic acceptance and incorporation of the "object's" characteristic(s) as one's own. Father is critical of me. I accept the introject "I am defective," and I identify with the object by "being critical" myself. (of myself and others) The secondary gain from this is the avoidance of loss, and separation anxiety. Part of Father lives on in me. Not separating and individuating leaves one with poor boundaries (self versus other) and unresolved grief (we never work through.) Working through the defense requires a transference and the acquistion of one's own values and characteristics. Internalization seems less ominous to me, a more conscious process. Changing religions as an adult might be an example. We let go of the familiy introjected value and accept responsibilty for our spirituality in our own way. (Even that might be more of the same.) In summary: I do not know. Internalization before S&I might lead to Introjection. Internalization after S&I seems extra-psychic. I like the color blue rather than I am the color blue. Snack time!
