kathleen riordan speeth, a psychologist
into gurdjieff, wrote some intro books.
ran across a nice intro to the 3
major centers in one of her books,( head,
heart, gut).
"One person may depend more on head than
heart, for example, while another may allow
emotion to hold sway over him where logic
fails. Everyone is born with one "brain"
predisposed to predominate over the other
two."
She uses numbers 1,2,3 to mean something
different than egram types.
1 is gut type, 2 is heart type, 3 is head...
All 3 lack inner will and unity.
interestingly(to me, anayway) she says...
"Men nos. 123 differ from one another
in their habits, tastes, and styles of life.
THEY CORRESPOND ROUGHLY TO SHELDON'S VARIETIES
OF PHYSIQUE." ie, endo, meso, ecto..., etc.
"...which proves to be a very good fit for
Gurdjieff's (system).
In literary terms we can see them as 3
familiar Shakespearian characters:
Falstaff (gut), Prince Hal (heart),
and Hamlet (head)
"For each of these three basic types there
is a form of art, a form of music, a kind of
religious practice that is most appealing.
Man 1 is moved by pomp and ceremony, by sacred
rites and holy repetitions, while man 2 has
an affinity for prayer and devoted sacrifice
before god or guru. Man 3 theologizes,
categorizes, debates and disputes in his almost
tropistic orientation toward wisdom."
gut - karmic yoga, fakirs
heart - bhakti yoga, monks
head - jnana yoga, yogis
She even has a drawing with all 3
of Sheldon's basic body types represented.
the major triads r the hidden key to
understanding the egram.
