: : I am trying to ascertain the incentive for someone to develop as a SIX or a FOUR, or myself as a SEVEN.
: As a FOUR, the incentive for me is that I've tried living as a 3 or a 5, and it left me miserable. The 4-ish thoughts wouldn't stop and let me rest. It just doesn't work to become something you're not just because it's more accepted by society.
: : But then psychology itself lacks the discipline of pure scientific research.
: True enough, if you're using the enneagram as a purely psychological system for analysis. But in fact, the search for the Self is scientific in the purest sense of the word--you can't read about it in a book to find the answers, but you can perform the experiment yourself and find the same things that others have found; the results are repeatable. It is knowledge, truth, AND science.
: : On the other hand, why do we all insist on attempting to limit the tools we use? A carpenter would not build a house using just a hammer. Nor would a Carpenter write a song without an E sharp major. It takes all kinds of tools to do the best work possible.
: Exactly. Although I wouldn't write a song in E sharp major; I would use F major. And I wouldn't use F major because it has too many sharps, which are a pain in the butt to play on a stringed instrument. :-)

F major has 1 flat. No sharps. l just feel like picking on someone. l know you (Hal) and you won't degrade me for correcting you. = )
My incentive for being a 4 is my opinion that the ordinary world, the here and now are painfully boring. It's also my disdain for conformity and for people who want to be like everyone else. l could see myself as a 5 (if there were no 4), but not 3.
