It would seem clear that most people involved in the media are Sensing types--iNtuitives aren't so fixated on the external world and current events to begin with.
As for speculating on the future, my first reaction was to say that it is not really an attempt at iNtuition. It seems to me that dwelling on the past makes it only natural to speculate on the future. People who do this are focused on what they had and have lost, and look forward to a time when they may recapture it. The SJ Traditionalists would fall in this category. The SP Performers would speculate simply to draw attention to themselves and show everyone how smart they are by attempting to put 2 and 2 together to speculate on the future.
But my second thought was that there is an iNtuitive aspect at work here. When the media speculates on what people in the news are thinking or feeling or on what they will do in the future, what the media is really doing is attempting to find some meaning in the events they're reporting on. The problem is that there really is no meaning beyond the ones we ascribe to the situations. Where the iNtuition fails the media types is in understanding the people they're reporting about, and what meaning the people involved in the story ascribed to their situation. So it could be a failure to understand people and their motivations that leads to the sensationalism and poor speculation.
That's my speculation on this idea anyway.
