You are right on this, the Big Five (including the impopular scale neuroticism) is the 'new generation MBTI'.
However the MBTI makes you look better by not showing your weak sides and most people don't seem to really want to know themselves (including their dark sides), so the MBTI will be succesful for a long time (just like the E-gram).
