I don't think that the enneagram of personality types can resolve the compatibility issue very well. I have read this, and I repeat it with general faith... "the right person is a mentally and emotionally healthy person of ANY type." (paraphrased, for I do not remember the exact words). The rest is up to you, and the phenomenon of "chemistry." The book (or at least one of them) that Carol is looking for, I believe, is Helen Palmer's second enneagram book (the white one)... "...Love and Work." Palmer says, basically, that every possible combination may or may not work, for such and such reasons. Overcoming your dominant passion (envy for 4's, avarice for 5's, etc.) is definitely one of the keys to becoming a more emotionally-dynamic and accessible person, and an easier person to relate to.

I hope I've assisted you a little bit in sorting out this matter. Laters! -Derf

(To Carol): Oh, my dearest Carol (sigh). Me? A worthy resource? Please tell me you're joking. You know perfectly well that I know nothing more than you do. Except in this case, I knew what book had the compatibility chart. Har de har de har! ;>

But there is one I've seen that talks about compatibility that I don't remember the name of. It only touches slightly on the matter, and the conclusions make sense, so anyone might guess them. One curious thing: the only type that was cited as compatible with 4 was 8, and vice-versa. But *please*, don't be led into taking that talk too seriously. Trust your heart!
