: I am very interested learning more about instinctual subtypes: self-preserving, social, and sexual. I feel that my question of whether I am a 5w4 or 4w5 is dependent on whether my instinctual needs or drive is assuaged. I am a very happy 4w5 and an intensely searching from behind a veil 5w4.
: I am INFJ, and so logically see myself as a 4 with dominant introverted intuition, but I act like an INTJ when my instinctual needs are not met and so pose as a 5. Can anyone else relate to this???

Hi Peb, If you are a 4w5, you will always search for self. 4's negatively identified with their parents as children and they felt misunderstood. Try writing a journel about yourself and see what you look like to yourself. Feedbacks from others are effective as well. Sometimes I wonder am I a 4 instead of a 7w6. In Don Riso "Personality types"(revised ed., he discusses how different enneatypes function on different levels in the back of his book, and I saw myself to be a 7. I feel I need feedback just like you. You're on the right track. I do agree with the 4w3 respondant about trying too much at a deep level. 4w5's are the ones who struggle with depression more that any subtype of the Enneagram. Are you sure you are a 4w5? Let me attempt to help you with your question. Sexual are one on one types. Social are group of people types, and self-preservation are the individual types that is concerned about survival. This is the basic principles of each group from my studies on the topic. I hope to be some help to you and anybody else. Feel free to respond to me on your insight on 7's.
