: I believe that the answer is that since we magnify these emotions, they are very painful, and we are afraid that by acting, we will bring on more of these emotions, making the pain even worse. The idea of lacking what others have comes in the form of seeing that others don't have this terrible pain, and wishing we could be as happy as they are. But in this situation, it's more of an effect than a cause.

I agree with alot of that. In my experience, most of the 4's I know revel in the pain and sadness. It has a sort of spiritual quality and intensity that gives them a unique, glorious, and creative perspective on the world. The 4's I have worked with are unwilling to give up this special feeling, even if it's to their detriment. Their self-absorbtion or their focus on their pain and sadness is an existential one, and to focus outside and act in the world may lessen that. They don't want to lose the feeling.
If 6's need to feel the fear and do it anyway, 4's need to feel the pain and sadness and keep moving on.
