Can some one sort this out for me please? Eights are defenders of the victims of the world (help them to find justice) BUT they have little tolerance for those who show weakness (respect the strong). How can these two seemingly diametrical views exist in the same person?

Thanks to Dave and Mykl for the advice. I'm going to wait a bit before approaching my friend - he's travelling in a few days. If you have any more to say I'm listening!
