My two cents worth: I like Jung's inferior function as a source of shadow personality. That makes some 'intuitive' sense to me. When otherwise sensible people do strange things compulsively, I can see how unacknowdged 'dark side' may be at work. (W.J. Clinton?) However, this does not address for me heinous individuals, unless they are extreme cases of the above. My guess is that genetic and /or environmental contributions are at work. People who lack conscience or empathy are able to do 'evil' things. I do not see evil as a personality (Satan,) but more as an experience which we project meaning onto. For example, random disasters are random disasters for me. Jim Jones and Jonesboro are mental illness. Stalin? Hitler? Richard Speck? Charles Manson? I think some are beyond help in a normal life span. Some people are megalo- mniacs and/or paranoid schizophrenics, etc. Rule of law tries to balance individual versus community. The Holocaust happened. Jungle Law exists. Survival of the fittest. Civilization is an evolving process. I might let you act out for me issues I have not accepted within myself. Bottom line summary: for me, evil is unresolved anger (rage.) That's just me. Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' would be my book choice for a discussion group.
