Hi Kronos,
Thanks for your email; I'll be using it. I just got back from a trip to Canada to celebrate my mother's 98th birthday. I noticed the message string on Charisma before I left, but didn't have a chance to comment.
Our friend Mortimer Adler - identified three factor: ethos, pathos, and logos in "How to Speak, How to Listen". Adler used Shakespeare's Julius Caesar as an example - with speeches by Brutus, and then Mark Anthony - after Caesar's assassination.
Ethos comes first in a speech. It establishes the speakers credibility and credentials - his respectful and admirable character. Pathos comes second. It arouses the passions of the listeners, and gets their emotions aimed in the direction of the action that the speaker want's them to take. Pathos is the motivating factor. Logos comes last. It marshalls reasons, after the emotional mood has been established. It seems to me that ethos, pathos, and logos are elements of Charmisa conveyed by the speaker's Persona.
