Well, like Liz said, it's more about what type of people the players and especially the "gamemaster" are. A lot of D&D players are definitely into it for the stats, magical items and levels. I actually think that the creation of online games like Everquest and Ultima Online have helped out RPGs because more of the power and stats hungry gamers play them because it gives them a real world to live in. The people who still enjoy pen and paper RPGs likely still have more of an imagination, care more about the story and don't need the crutch of visuals to have an adventure.

The rebellion to the traditional RPG, of course, are White Wolf's endless series of Vampire, Werewolf, type games. The idea is that stats aren't as important (the stat system downright sucks in these games) and character and story are. The people I've played these games with, though, seem to go way overboard with character to the detriment of actual story, unfortunately. Suffice it to say, White Wolf game fans are mostly 4s or perhaps 5s with a strong 4 wing.

I agree with you about Magic and Warhammer. They are tactical games with a chance element under the guise of "fantasy." The guy who created Magic was actually a mathematician. The cards/miniatures might as well be World War II troops and not dragons and elves. I've never liked the whole card hordeing element and rarity issues when it comes to collectible card games, though. And the Warhammer miniatures are prohibitely expensive for little pieces of metal and plastic. I like the idea of miniature gaming, though, especially painting the damn things, which can be fun. But I'm a guy. Miniature gaming is not a good way to meet women. :-)
