Excellent question, Wayne! I think you are on the right track by speculating about that issue. It is exactly the area that throws off so many people trying to use the part of the enneagram related to psychology. Check out my comments sprinkled through the string below a few notches on the board started by Jacques on Bill Gates. My comments get at the issue of how the pop-enneagram way of typing people is an OK starting point but is one-dimensional. There is a way of typing that takes into account that ability to fool oneself. I lay out a few clues on how to develop a type analysis that can give you a sense of scale as to whether you are looking at a person who is, eg, a real six vs. a five that acts like a six, etc. Post a response to this if you get the drift and I'll clarify if possible.
