Because that would take away the subtleties and little treasures that I've found in the current figure. For instance, the numbers at the bottom (4 and 5) seem to suffer the most, and the number at the top (9) seems to suffer the least. The path along the outer triangle is something of a "path of productivity" (sloth to vanity to fear to resignation... to action, to commitment, to oneness). I have found too many convincing, touching, and generally overall good things about the established form to accept an alternative *easily* (not to say I'll never accept one). I believe, as you seem to, that many points of the theory need some revision, but as for which theories "might have something," I think that the established basic order of the Enneagram stands as much of a chance as any alternative.
