Fives are mentally active, most high strung in that way at the lower levels (according to Riso). Their basic motivation is to be independent, self-reliant and avoid intrusion by others. Can be mentally very arrogant.
Nines are more happy-go-lucky people, often denying anything negative about their habits, outwardly compliant--first say yes when you suggest something but then do whatever they want when you're not around. Passive-aggressive.
A five is very cerebral and has continuous thinking going on, making connections between things, finding out things that aren't right, accumulating data and all that to know what everything is about. A lower levels' nine solution is "so what?" If a five has to deliver an important report before going on to a vacation, s/he probably makes sure the work can be done in privacy and will try to do it as well as possible. At the lower levels the report might not make even much sense or concentrate on too delicate details, but it would get done. An unhealthier nine would just organize his/hers collection of magazines and just forget about doing that report because of that "So what?" So what if I don't do it? It doesn't matter.
A nine numbs things out and falls into routine and daydreaming when stressed up, a five gets more high-strung, more "aware" of things unknown and the thought processes speed up.
