Sure they have souls. Yet, their ability to affirm their own self-esteem from within themselves is underdeveloped. Therefore, they must look to the outside, from image-brokering to feedback-fishing. So they have no lack of humanity or feeling; they merely have an imbalance of perspective. In a way, that's what we all have, but Threes depend emotionally on others more than any other type (in the way that Sixes depend mentally and Nines instinctually), so their self-esteem complex is perhaps the most pronounced.

PS - compare Twos, who define themselves aggressively (actively, through self-extension), and Fours, who define themselves from within (imaginatively - the "fantasy self"). Also, it bears noting that self-definition "actively" or "from within" is not necessarily balanced or healthy.
