Very much like a movie. A decidedly modern one: quick flashes of angles and foci, an impression caught with every moment. Mood set by music and nondescript sounds. Also, my thought is very sparse. Just enough detail to make an impression, just enough movement to evoke something, then I stick with that impression, or move from impression to impression.
Other times, qualities of color, such as light and diluted for long-ago memories, might establish the mood. Positioning and pace are also important. I feel like a director's camera most of the time.
Your concept of thinking in abstract shapes fits me in at least one way: I remember songs, and even conversations, as vague visual outlines, borne of a kind of "synesthesia" in which each sound has a distinct shape. I can compress an entire song or conversation and flash it before my mind's eye instantaneously.
