This week's TIME is pretty interesting. Its the start of an examination of the movers and shakers of this century. This week it's on the leaders. Great collection of biographies! TR 7w8: can you find a better example of a generalist anywhere?? Lenin 5w6: intellectual, intolerant of oppositions FDR 8w7: power and optimism, radical changes, helping the poor Hitler 6w5: ideology based on fear, demagogue Churchill 9w8: a romantic and a realist, stubborn Gandhi 1w9: ascetic, believed in ways of the village Mao 7w6: visions and delusions for China, mistrustful of people Ho Chi Minh 6(complex)? 1(unbending belief)? too little info to tell ML King 8w9: powerful leader , "has a dream" Khomeini 6w5: ideology of opposition to shah, secularism, Americanism Thatcher 8w7: powerful and flamboyant Pope JPII ?? can't tell from article (by William Buckly, Jr, no wonder :) Reagan 9w8: likable, gentlemanly, yet stubborn Walesa 6w7: great as an opposition leader, less of a leader Gorbachev 8w7: led Russia through the tough reforms, now doing Pizza ads Mandela 9w1: peaceful means to unity, moral dignity, widely admired yet humble Note all the peaceful-opposition leaders Gandhi (1w9), ML King (8w9) and Mandela (9w1) have 9 wings. Watch for the best speeches: JFK (7w8??) FDR (8w7) Churchill (9w8) ML King (8w9) Do 8's make great speeches or what? :) Also watch for a rating of all the presidents of the century, with FDR and TR and Woodrow Wilson topping the list and Nixon and Carter ("should've been a preacher") around the bottom.
