Did you ever play any of the Ultima games from Ultima IV on? They all
revolve around a core set of virtues and principles. That fascinated me.
The honor code of the samurai. The spirit of fair play. The duty of
customer service. The responsibilities of political leadership. The
placing of people before cars, before developers' profits, before
architects' egos. Protecting the natural world -- I used to have to pass
through Gary, Ind., to get to and from college, and I can't see how anyone
can look at that place and not be instantly transformed into an
environmentalist. There are so many things in the world that transmit the
same message: "Something must be done." Which is what draws me to the
Confucian aphorism: "To see what's right and not do it is cowardice."
