How much difference is there between level 5 and level 6 anyway, for example, and what do we really gain by assigning this number to ourselves? And please don't anyone take this as an invitation to say that we shouldn't assign any numbers to people, like, say, enneatypes... :-)

I wouldn't be here on this board if I did not believe that people fit into an Enneatype. I actually find the Enneagram beautiful in the way it describes the basic fears, desires, and key motivations, the wings and arrows. I watch the culture I am in and the people around me and in the media; the test survives each time.
